I’ve always suffered from the lack of a good download manager for linux until I stumbled upon JDownloader. I swear it is something better than you could expect.
Just copy a link from Rapidshare, Mediafire, Hotfile, or any such file hosting service available and it’ll do the download for you. Yes, you don’t need to have premium accounts for any of these services. No more count downs. If the site requests filling out Captchas JDownloader will just show you the captcha and all you have to do it type it in and press Enter. Furthermore, once a compressed file is downloaded it is automatically uncompressed.
As the name suggests it is written in Java. Does some updating thing once installed so you’ll have to wait for a few minutes. Another con is the not so eye catching interface. But pros overrule over them.
JDownloader has recently obtained its own PPA so nothing to worry about installing.
Refer this post to get instructions on adding the PPA and installing.
dude, have you tried wget?
Well, of course! Who haven’t! But wget is nothing compared to this!
oh well, I guess I should give it a try then. I tried gget but unfortunately it was unstable 🙁
Also try download them all addon for firefox its great.
Yeah, but it doesn’t handle rapidshare, etc downloads by itself.
installation kinda sucked.. http://twitpic.com/2alffe
Seems to be a prob with installing java. Try installing java separately from Software Centre. Didn’t occur to me coz I had previously installed it.
tried to install via software centre. it has j-downloader on left pane under get software. when i click install it goes but stops at 5%
more info section says application has unknown maintenance status..
i hope it will fix soon.. 🙂
Hmm, most probably some problem with the repositories. Yeah, will get fixed soon
Thanks you so much for your review on JDownloader! I’ve tested the tool after I red your article and I’m totally impressed by it. With the router reconnect function I don’t have to buy premium accounts anymore. I can recomment Jdownloader to anybody who use 1click hosts!
